Hongu Taisha is the last shrine of Kumano Sanzan, the ultimate goal of Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, head shrine of approximately 3000 Shinto shrine spread throughout Japan.

Located on the mountain, in the forest ... All pilgrimage route leads to the Hongu Taisha as the center of Kumano Kodo.

Originally Hongu Taisha located in Kumanogawa riverbank, but most of the original shrine building was destroyed during a big flood years ago. Then the remaining buildings were moved to higher ground, about 1km from the original site.

Hongu Taisha pavilion was an original Japanese shrine architecture, using all natural unfinished materials and natural colors. A touch of gold ornaments gives an elegant accent to this shrine.
To reach Hongu Taisha current location, we should climb (again and again) hundreds of stairs, going through a cedar forest.

As a sign of Hongu Taisha original location, called Oyunohara, they built Otorii, a giant steel torii/gate, the largest torii in the world, soaring 33,9m height and 42m width.
